MFC5032 - Researching Media, Film and Culture

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the social, cultural and historical contexts within which communication media emerges and evolves
Demonstrate an understanding of cultural borrowings, appropriation, transformation and influence within film and media forms
Demonstrate understanding of a range of research methods
Demonstrate the ability to select and apply appropriate methods in the formulation and conduct of research
Understand the procedural, ethical, political and discursive issues involved in the film and media research process.

Content:

This module will introduce students to a range of approaches to research, including qualitative and quantitative methods, and to the processes involved in formulating a research proposal and conducting a research project in Film and Media Studies..

It investigates media techniques and forms through historical constructs, demonstrating the transformation of cultural communications through social, political and technological influences. The module will also offer a discussion of historical research as an interpretative activity in itself and will offer historical case study material as a way of exploring the interaction of social, political, economic and technological factors in shaping contempary media.

Assignment 1: Group Presentation
1 x 10 minute presentation on topics covered during the first part of this module.

Assignment 2: Proposal + literature review
This assignment is composed of 2 parts:
1- Research initial proposal (1000 words). This will be further developed as a research project dissertation at level 6.
2- Literature review (1500 words).

Both parts must be submitted in order to pass the assignment.

001 Group presentation 1 x 10 minutes end of semester 1 50%
002 Project Proposal & Literature review 1 x 2500 words end of sem 2 50%
