MFC4102 - Genre & Film

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the concept of genre
(2) explain selected examples of genre in different forms of expression
(3) use the concept in analyzing a range of films
(4) demonstrate skills in writing, using a variety of forms.

Content:

The module introduces students to the concept of genre and traces its historical development. It examines a variety of forms of expression and specific examples of genre in forms such as theatre, writing, painting and film. It proceeds to conduct a detailed analysis of selected film genres, using concepts such as narrative, style, form, representation, ideology and stardom. It also relates the development of genres to wider economic, social and political contexts.
