JOU7146 - Applied Journalism Research Project

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate professional competence in the understanding of and practical application of a range of news sourcing, research and dissemination methods
Demonstrate a critical understanding of alternative approaches to news stories
Develop a portfolio of work of professional standard, consistent with ethical, legal and regulatory principles
Critically reflect on the effectiveness of news gathering and publication techniques, their impact on audiences and the scope for future development

Content:

This module builds on from modules which trainees complete to achieve Postgraduate Diploma standard and requires the compliation of a substantial portfolio of practical work, along with an accompanying critical reflection on the portfolio which draws on theory and knowledge and understanding of best practice. After prepartory seminars, students will work independently on the portfolio with academic supervision.

Further details relating to assessment
The portfolio would normally consist of the following:
• News stories and features totalling 8,000 words for print / magazine students OR
• Audio / Video artefacts totalling 30 minutes for broadcast students
Other variations on portfolio content, to allow for multiplatform publication, can be negotiated with tutors.
It is anticipated that most trainees will complete the content for the portfolio in the workplace under the supervision of Leeds Trinity tutors.

Assessment:

001 Portfolio 1 x 8000 words 6 months after completing PGDip 70%
002 Critically reflective report 1 x 4000 words 6 months after completing PGDip 30%
003 Dissertation 1 x10000 words 100%
