Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of and abilities to fulfil the key roles and team co-ordination integral to the operation of a press newsroom
Deploy core production skills in the creation and transmission of written, audio, video and visual materials
Demonstrate knowledge of and critical reflection upon the intellectual, social and technical skills integral to achieving high standards of press practice in the production of news material for print and online
Mobilise all the skills, knowledge and reflective considerations acquired in the News Skills, Public Affairs and Law, Ethics and Regulations modules

Content:

Establishing news values; generating story leads; covering diary jobs; establishing treatment of stories and potential stories; researching and gathering information; developing relationships with sources; recognising ethical issues and other aspects of professional conduct; generating news material; generating features material; working to deadlines; writing to word limits; writing / producing for target audiences; participation in editorial conferences; handling photographs and writing picture captions; learning to use content management systems and online content management; developing online writing skills; developing headline writing and SEO skills; acquiring skills in video journalism and basis video editing skills; acquiring skills in gathering and uploading audio material

Further details relating to assessment
The portfolio would normally include 10 stories and one feature, all of which should have been published online. Trainees will be expected to include screen shots as evidence of publication and evidence of story being promoted via social media, along with evidence of number of views each story has had online.
In addition students will undergo tutor appraisals at the end of live production projects and will be required to successfully pass these before progressing to the Professional Placement module.

The substance and assessment of this module is influenced by the requirements of the industry accreditation bodies, the National Council for the Training of Journalists and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.
