Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of and abilities to fulfil the key roles and team co-ordination integral to the efficient operation of a radio newsroom
Deploy core production skills in the creation and transmission of audio and written materials
Demonstrate knowledge of and critical reflection upon the intellectual, social and technical skills integral to achieving high standards of press practice in the production of radio news and online publication
Mobilise all the skills, knowledge and reflective considerations acquired in the News Skills, Public Affairs and Law, Ethics and Regulations modules

Content:

Establishing news values and audience profiles; news recognition; news prioritising; creating a running order; research and sources; interviewing for audio; vox pops; scripting for the spoken word; producing news packages; constructing news bulletins; cutting, wrapping and cueing of audio material; news reading and live presentation; editing; sound recording and sound effects; driving a radio desk; in-studio production; working to deadlines; briefings; timings; radio grammar and conventions; team working and team leadership. Use of wire and on-line data feeds. Voice training. Integration of audio material in a multi-media newsroom. Development of material for online publication to support broadcast output.

Further details relating to assessment
The portfolio would normally include 4 x 1,500-word equivalent production artefacts. In addition students will undergo tutor appraisals at the end of live production projects and will be required to successfully pass these before progressing to the Professional Placement module.
