Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a systematic handling of key aspects of television journalism.
Demonstrate practical skills relevant to the production of televisual news stories.
Critically evaluate the production process and the finished product.
Work effectively within a team to meet deadlines and utilise resources effectively.

Content:

This module pulls together the practical and cognitive skills introduced in level 4 and developed further in level 5. It examines television journalism in terms of content, story focus, style and focus. It explores current theoretical debates about quality and journalism. Throughout, students engage in the production of television news and see the process through to the news programme production stage.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module is taught via a series of interactive workshops which use innovative and creative teaching methods in order to foster student engagement and develop practical skills. The focus is on student-centred practice, using a broad range of simulated and live news exercises which allow the cohort to use their practical skills in safe environment where they benefit from tutor feedback and mentoring on an on-going basis.

Additional Assessment Information
Portfolio 1 will normally include individual/small group-produced television news items presented as part of a group-produced news bulletin plus critical evaluation analysing the work, assessing the teamwork, and drawing comparisons with the industry.

Portfolio 2 will normally include individual/small group-produced television news items presented as part of a whole-group-produced news programme, plus critical evaluation analysing the work, assessing teamwork and drawing comparisons with the industry. Detailed requirements of the portfolios will be published in the module handbook.

Students must complete and submit all forms of assessment to be eligible to pass the module.
