HUM7153 - Prose Workshop 2

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

produce a sustained body of prose writing;
demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the creative process;
demonstrate an advanced knowledge of literary texts cognate to their own work;
demonstrate advanced critical awareness of cultural and stylistic issues pertaining to creative writing;
demonstrate advanced self-reflective practices.

Content:

This module builds upon the Prose Workshop 1 module and further supports and develops students’ prose writing skills through tutor and peer feedback in workshops, leading to the production of a sustained prose work. As the student develops as a writer, the module focuses more upon self-reflective practice, as expressed through the production of a commentary which assesses the individual’s progress as a writer against the goals identified in the Prose Workshop 1 proposal. These practices are intended to lay the foundation for the self-guided Dissertation module.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The focus of this module will be upon students’ creative work, which will be circulated in advance and workshopped in weekly small group sessions. Students are expected to present their work-in-progress to their peers. Through sharing and discussing work in small groups, students will use peer and tutor feedback to further develop and hone their prose skills and build upon the work produced in Workshop 1. A greater degree of self-reflection upon the student’s individual identity as a writer is encouraged, as demonstrated by a commentary upon work produced and plans for future work
