HUM7103 - Reading as a Writer

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

critically evaluate written texts;
demonstrate advanced critical understanding of cultural and stylistic issues pertaining to creative writing;
demonstrate advanced critical and creative understanding of literary texts cognate to their own work;
display a high level of proficiency in writing techniques.

Content:

Sessions will be built upon group discussion of contemporary works such as novels, plays and poetry collections, through which students will be introduced to a broad range of techniques, e.g. narrative, dramatic and poetic. Analysis of method and effect will be used in order to provide useful exempla for meeting personal creative challenges, which may involve short writing exercises. Students will produce a portfolio demonstrating their creative and critical responses to texts studied, which will be submitted at the start of Semester 2, in order to allow a period of reflection after the taught module.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Weekly sessions on primary texts and critical theory. Students will be encouraged to respond critically and creatively to texts. Seminars will include opportunities to write and to share and discuss students’ writing.

Additional Assessment information
Portfolio will consist of creative writing and critical reflection, normally 3,000 words for the former and 2,000 words for the latter.

Assessment:
