FSL4402 - Children, Physical Activity and Health

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the benefits of physical activity and the physical activity/health relationship in children
2 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the factors influencing children’s level and type of involvement in sport and physical activity
3 Demonstrate knowledge of the determinants of physical activity
4 Assess the nature and extent of physical activity in children in relation to current guidelines
5 Evaluate the current provision and interventions to promote physical activity for children in schools and the community

Content:

Benefits of physical activity for young people: psychological and physiological, tracking. Relationship between physical activity and health.
Current levels of physical activity; gender differences, and socio-economic variations. Patterns of participation and recommended levels.
Social and psychological influences and determinants. Issues regarding negative effects e.g. burn out, drop out.
Influences on the sport experiences of children, e.g. family, coach, peers, school, local provision and initiatives.
Environmental determinants influencing participation e.g. access to appropriate environments, availability of physical activity opportunities.
The role of the school and physical education in developing positive attitudes towards sport, physical activity and health.
Current provision and interventions.
