FDA4102 - HLTA Preparation

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
select, classify, analyse and justify tasks carried out in school that characterise their personal competence in relation to the national HLTA standards;
identify and categorise data that appropriately models their own capabilities in relation to the national HLTA standards.

Content:

In this module, students will follow the nationally agreed programme for preparation for assessment against the HLTA standards. This will include detailed and practical explanation of the HLTA standards, strategies for providing evidence through task writing, advice in building the portfolio of documentary evidence and guidance regarding the assessment process. Opportunities will be given for students to reflect on their own role and competence in relation to the standards whilst developing reflective, analytical and evaluative writing skills, drawing on e-sources and noting the importance of observations as a research tool in the work setting. Following the module, students will be eligible to submit their portfolio of written tasks and documents for externally provided assessment against the standards and for the award of HLTA status. During this module a library reminder session will introduce databases and journals.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Pre-requisites
Candidates must work in a school or teacher-managed setting and hold a role that enables them to demonstrate that they meet the HLTA professional standards.

Learning and teaching will include a range of methods such as lectures, seminars, e-working, workshops and tutorials, with emphasis on team experience and peer support, large and small group discussions, problem-solving activities and individual and paired working.

Students may be expected to draw on a range of theoretical/academic, personal and work-based resources. Course documentation, support materials and web-based materials will be available on the VLE as appropriate.

Study skills will be developed including collaborative group-work and discussion. During the course of each session there will be opportunities for tutor/student interaction to meet individual needs and help develop skills, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding relating to the aims and objectives of the module.

Students will maintain their Personal Development Log during this module and on-going self-evaluation will be part of the students’ identification of needs.

The regional provider of assessment sets a national submission timetable; as the same submission is presented for both national HLTA and Leeds Trinity FD assessment, exceptionally, the FD submission date is aligned with the external submission date. This is typically four working weeks after the final day of the module.
