FDA4022 - Creating an Enabling Environment for Young Children

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
characterise the ideal physical environment for young children;
debate the importance of building relationships with young children and how this can be achieved in a range of circumstances including diverse families, nursery, school etc.;
examine issues related to transitions within young children’s lives and those related to separation and early independence;
devise relevant enrichment activities for the children within their work setting;
model the use of ICT to enhance their assignment.

Content:

This module introduces students to creating appropriate environments in a range of settings e.g. home, school, nursery, health related setting or club. The module will include a study of:
• health and safety issues including safeguarding;
• play-based environments;
• building nurturing relationships with young children and their parents/carers;
• applying the multi-agency context;
• valuing of outdoor provision;
• effective use of resources e.g. ICT, toys, language;
• the principles of needs assessment;
• how to make observations and record findings to inform the needs analysis.
Within this module, students will be expected to demonstrate ICT presentation skills.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will address Foundation Degree Supporting Early Years participants.

Learning and teaching will include a range of methods such as lectures, seminars, e-working, workshops and tutorials, with emphasis on team experience and peer support, large and small group discussions, problem-solving activities, and individual and paired working.

Students may be expected to draw on a range of theoretical/academic, personal and work-based resources. Course documentation, support materials and web-based materials will be available on the VLE as appropriate.

Study skills will be developed. During the course of each session there will be opportunities for tutor/student interaction to meet individual needs and help develop skills, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding relating to the aims and objectives of the module.

Students will maintain their Personal Development log during this module and on-going self-evaluation will be part of the students’ identification of needs.

Further details relating to assessment
The group presentation will be accorded 5 minutes per person. Formative feedback from the presentation supports students in their development of the rationale and the report.
Informal numerical marks will be recorded intra-departmentally for reference in cases of condonement and provided to the student as formative feedback.
