EDS6012 - Contemporary Debates in Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Review recent legislation and theory related to education including politics and education policies and their effects on learning
2 Critically evaluate a range of perspectives related to key educational themes and question concepts and theories encountered in their studies
3 Reflect on their own value systems, development and experiences

Content:

The focus of this module is to draw together aspects of educational debate using government reports, inspection evidence and research to inform the debate about effective education.

The module provides opportunities for students to appreciate the problematic nature of educational theory, policy and practice, encourages the interrogation of education processes and develops in students the ability to construct and sustain a reasoned argument.

Themes include:
• Critique of relevant policy, legislation and practice
• Issues related to underachievement in key groups
• Developments in teaching strategies eg. Creativity and motivation
• Key issues in diversity and inclusion

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
