CYP6302 - Safeguarding and Supporting Welfare

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Evaluate key pieces of policy and legislation that relate to safeguarding children and their welfare.
Differentiate between usual child developmental needs and definitions of significant harm.
Explain the different categories of abuse and analyse their impact upon child development.
Appraise the impact portrayals of child abuse in the media has had upon practice in safeguarding and welfare fields.
Critically reflect upon professional ethics and safeguarding responsibilities within the children’s workforce in general and their own workplace in particular.

Content:

This module will explore the complex issue of safeguarding and protecting children. Included throughout will be consideration of the relationship between ethics and professional accountability and the requirements as set out in current welfare and safeguarding legislation and policy initiatives relevant to this area of study, along with relevant current research findings. Students will be expected to engage with current procedures and understand the frameworks within which all practitioners are expected to operate. Students will learn the different categories of abuse. This module will also address the expertise outlined in the Common Core of Skills & Knowledge.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, directed reading, research tasks and workshop sessions. Assessment will be supported by peer review and formative feedback.
