On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate the ability to devise, plan and structure an investigation or a work based project having regard to principles of good research and project design and to ethics;
Demonstrate the ability to collect and analyse information and/or to undertake practice in a workplace context and arrive at conclusions on the basis of systematic and sustained reflection and/or argument;
Demonstrate the ability to interpret and appraise critically a variety of types of evidence;
Write in an appropriate style.
The module provides an opportunity for students to complete an independent investigation or to undertake a work based project within an area of interest. It will entail application of the principles and practices introduced in the Research Methods module at Level 5 and offer students the opportunity to extend their engagement with employers. Identification of an area of inquiry will lead to one of three routes; a practical investigation, a theoretical study or a work based project that the student negotiates with an employer. A selected literature review will inform the investigation or work based project. Evidence will be gathered with due regard to ethical concerns and international contexts, where appropriate.
The module involves largely self-managed and independent study. Supervision will be provided following initial briefing.

Further details relating to assessment
Students will be guided towards one of three routes for study: an empirical study, a theoretical study or a work based project that the student negotiates with an employer.
In order to allow latitude for construction of a journal article and/or the provision of a report in a format useful to the employer in a work based project, the Module Handbook will provide guidance regarding appropriate wordage equivalence. In order for wordage equivalence to apply, students must obtain agreement for both supervisor and module co-ordinator.
