CYP4172 - Health,Safety and Care Routines

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Identify relevant key health, safety and care routines to be applied within the early years environment;
Demonstrate knowledge of basic First Aid, emergency responses and hygiene practices, which can be appropriately applied to a range of circumstances and events;
Demonstrate understanding of young children’s health and nutrition needs;
Demonstrate knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory welfare requirements and other key policy and legislative documents.

Content:

This module will require students to be familiar with the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and the importance of health and safety in early years’ environments. Studies will include:
• Welfare requirements/ratios;
• Development of policies;
• Childcare routines e.g. feeding, sleep, bathroom and nappy changing procedures;
• Risk Assessments;
• Importance of record keeping.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place via lectures and in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops. Formative assessment by self and peers will be integrated into the sessions.

The assessment will include clear reference to the Early Years Foundation Stage Safeguarding and Welfare requirements. The written rationale should include justification of choices made when compiling evidence for the notice board.
