CYP4162 - Unique Child: Social and Emotional Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a knowledge of theory related to the development of an individual’s personality and characteristics;
Identify factors in a child’s life that influence their personality, behaviour, self awareness and self esteem;
Begin to analyse relevant research and case study evidence related to this field;
Demonstrate understanding of importance of effective and professional communication with children and their families.

Content:

This module introduces students to a range of relevant theory related to personal and social development; the development of personality, self awareness, self esteem and identify in children 0 – 8 years.

The module will include a study of:
• Relevant theory related to the personal, social and emotional development of young children and their behaviour;
• Influences on a child’s personality, behaviour and identity; how they understand the world around them and how they relate to it;
• Professional ethics, practice guidance and the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge;
• The importance of effective communication and professionally appropriate response to a range of children with diverse personalities within early years and educational settings.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place via lectures and in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions. Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops. Formative assessment by self and peers will be integrated into the sessions.
