CYP4132 - Safeguarding and Child Protection

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of local and national legal and policy framework around protecting and safeguarding children;
Identify signs and indicators of abuse and neglect;
Understand factors which may indicate a child or young person may be at an increased risk of harm;
Outline roles and responsibilities of practitioners when responding to concerns, including multi-agency working.

Content:

This module will explore the complex issue of safeguarding and protecting children. It will consider current legislation and policy initiatives relevant to this area of study along with relevant current research findings. Students will be expected to engage with current procedures and understand the frameworks within which all practitioners are expected to operate. Specific reference will be made to the requirements of current statutory frameworks for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Students will learn the different categories of abuse. This module will include the Leeds Trinity Safeguarding training course, for which a certificate of attendance will be awarded, and will develop the expertise outlined in the Common Core of Skills & Knowledge.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, some of which will be student-led. Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.

Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops. Formative assessment by self and peers will be integrated into the sessions.
