CYP4052 - Professional Development and Placement 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Recognise the employability skills required to work in the field of early childhood education and care and identify current personal skill sets;
Successfully conclude a professional placement demonstrating awareness of the appropriate skills;
Reflect on the relationship between university-based learning and the placement experience; analyse their performance and plan for personal/professional development in the field.

Content:

This module will involve three stages: preparation, professional placement and reflection. Current policy guidelines will provide the context, e.g. Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, Common Core of Skills and Knowledge and National Occupational Standards.

Three phases of preparation to:
(a) identify and enhance students’ current skills for learning from university, placement and employment;
(b) address generic employability skills and professionalism;
(c) address employability skills and professionalism particularities regarding the early years workforce.

Professional placement: students will be supported in finding themselves a placement, undertake a period of professional placement in an appropriate setting and complete tasks set.

Reflection: students will complete a report reflecting upon the practical skills gained through the professional placement and what they have learnt about the application of theoretical understanding in a practical setting. They will also create a development plan for their personal, academic and professional development.
