BMM5552 - People Management

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Critically evaluate the effectiveness of a range of management and leadership models including those dealing with setting up teams and organisational change;
2 Demonstrate experience of a range of management skills such as coaching, goal-setting, effective communication and personal discipline;
3 Demonstrate experience of working within a team and reflecting on their personal skills and areas for development;
4 Research, analyse and present complex information as part of a team.

Content:

Theoretical management and leadership models and the application of these in practice. Class-based exercises involving people management skills such as goal-setting, coaching techniques and effective communication. Practical experience of team-working and individual reflection on personal performance and areas for development.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures and workshops in 3-hour sessions involving theoretical content, simulations and activities all run in team formats. The course will conclude with a team based exercise and presentation.

Additional assessment information
Any students taking this assessment as a deferred assessment (DO) or re-sit will be assessed by a 4,000-word report with 100% weighting. There will be a strong emphasis on a reflection of actual team work either of the class-based exercises or alternative individual experience. In the absence of this, the student will be advised to defer to attend the course the following year.
