On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Critically review a range of leadership models and theories contrasting the content and process theories with the new wave of concepts such as distributed, shared and connective leadership.
2 Demonstrate their own development of leadership awareness through personal exercises and critical reflections.
3 Engage critically with academic sources and present a coherent and reasoned argument in debate with other students.
A critical overview of traditional approaches to leadership such as trait, situational and process theories.
A wide-ranging consideration of new approaches which conceptualise leadership as separate from authority and management such as Connective Leadership, Shared/Distributed Leadership, Servant Leadership.
In-depth analysis of academic papers from one of these approaches and engagement in debate with other students.
Individual reflection of personal leadership potential drawing on a range of exercises to evaluate students’ power bases, support networks and interpersonal relationships.
The 2 hour sessions will involve a series of lectures with personal exercises for reflection and development and engagement in student led debates. Students will also participate in action learning sets that will facilitate their leadership development goals.

Students taking this for 10 credits will be assessed by a 3,000 word Report only.
The debate will run as a Question Time type format in which students can ask questions of an expert panel and make contributions.
The report length is designed to incorporate a PDP update (1,000), debate reflection (1,000) as well as a summative essay on leadership (2,000).
