TRS4912 - Experiencing Christian Faith and Worship

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:br>
1 Demonstrate an understanding of the basic tenets of the Christian faith, as set out in the Apostles’ Creed, and how these have been revealed through scripture and other theological writings
2 Demonstrate knowledge of the origins and historical development of Christian worship and different patterns of worship today
3 Demonstrate an awareness of a range of different ways in which the Bible has been interpreted to communicate an understanding of faith, and the practical ways in which this might be expressed
4 Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of some specifics of Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant liturgy and worship patterns, through study of primary sources, listening to practitioners and observing worship
5 Discuss and analyse the theological significance of Christian rites and liturgical and other texts, and how they have developed over time

Content:

The nature of Christian faith and the means by which is has been revealed, recorded and experienced by the church.
The basic articles of faith, including the virgin birth, death and resurrection of Christ, the nature of God the Father and the Holy Spirit, the Trinity and their interpretation by different denominations.
Introduction to hermeneutics through study of selected texts from different traditions and denominations
The church and its worship, introduced from theological, historical and sociological perspectives
Liturgy, its forms and historical development
Ecumenical discussion and differences in worship

Learning and Teaching Information:

The course will be taught in plenary sessions which will make use of a blend of teaching and learning methods. These will normally include: lecture-style presentations by the tutor; seminar-style discussion of a particular topic; informal prepared presentations by students, followed by discussion; other exercises as appropriate to material and group. This module will include sessions led by visiting lectures and/or visits to places of Christian worship. Guidance on reading in preparation for each session and activity will be given; and learning will be supported where appropriate by VLE and other electronic resources. Guidance on research and essay-writing will be embedded in the learning and teaching process throughout the module; and may also be supported by tutorial guidance on essay plans and drafts if required.
