SML4012 - English Language, Professional and Academic Development (International)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Understand and synthesise information from various sources
2 Develop effective listening, note-taking and writing strategies appropriate to their chosen programme of study
3 Communicate clearly and effectively in English both for academic and professional purposes
4 Understand a range of aspects of British life and culture.
5 Compile a presentable dossier of material explaining work and other experience relevant to job applications
6 Undertake a personal skills audit and prepare an action plan in response to it

Content:

Typically 50 to 100 words
The module will enable students to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for both formal (e.g. presentations) and informal (e.g. participation in discussions and seminars) contexts.
It will cover structural elements of English Language and also explore aspects of modern British life, including society, culture, organisation and business practice.
The module will help students to develop the skills needed to learn from academic texts, listen to lectures and take notes in an English-speaking college environment and include work on listening and reading skills, note-taking, seminar participation, research techniques, writing essays and taking examinations.
The module will provide learning opportunities for developing their employability skills from CV writing to skills audit and self reflections. The module will culminate in a six week intensive period of activities relating to employability and preparation for level 2 Placement.

Learning and Teaching Information:

English Language sessions and employability sessions will run in parallel throughout the year and students will join BMM students for taught sessions on BAM1202 including Moodle based engagement.

The 6 weeks – which replaces the placement at level 1 for these students – will include a range of activities, drawing on staff from across the college, to develop employability skills, academic skills, professional skills, provide re-assessment surgeries where necessary, cultural activities, culminating in group presentations.

Additional Information
This module is core for all students identified as needing specialist language support. Individual needs will be identified through the admissions process; through intro week and in-sessional sessions; pre-sessional assessment will also be undertaken where possible or available.

This replaces the equivalent programme PDPM and a pass is a requirement for progression to level 5
