SHN4702 - Professional Development & Placement 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) write a CV and letter of application;
(2) reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses in professional skills such as effective communication, team work, use of IT, planning, administration, problem solving, inter-personal skills interview skills; develop a personal action plan related to career development;
(3) analyse the aims, procedures and activities of a specific organisation;
(4) apply knowledge and skills gained from studies in college;
(5) demonstrate satisfactory performance across the pre- placement preparation and placement periods.

Content:

Students will undertake a professional development pre placement programme: career opportunities; employer expectations, placement and career planning and management; writing CVs and letters of application; interview skills.

Students will be placed within an appropriate organisation.

The detailed nature of the placement will be the subject of a formal "learning agreement" between the student, the placement provider and the College.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures, workshops and tutorials comprise the pre-placement programme which precedes the block placement period.

A pre-and post placement tutorial and a meeting during the placement is held between the student and professional mentor.

Additional Assessment information
Placement practical performance is assessed by the College Tutor (Pass/Fail) based on information obtained directly and from the employer's report. A Pass is necessary in the written and practical components of the placement.

A pass is necessary for the Professional Development Portfolio and the Placement.

Other relevant Matters
Students with special needs will be advised to seek support from the Disability Co ordinator.

Normally, a student will be ineligible to undertake the block placement without (a) completion of the pre placement programme and (b) the required communication of placement details between student and the Employer Partnership Office.

In unavoidable circumstances when a full six week placement with an organisation is not possible an alternative project which meets the module learning objectives will be agreed between the student, supervisor and the EPO.
