On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

i) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the changing definitions of health, illness and disease and their relationship with socio-cultural factors;
ii) demonstrate an understanding of psychological factors such as attitudes, beliefs and values, locus of control, self-esteem and attribution which influence health behaviour;
iii) demonstrate a critical awareness of national and community health promotion campaigns;
iv) plan a health promotion campaign for a specific community group.

i) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the legal responsibilities of employers under health and safety legislation;
ii) evaluate the workplace as an influencing factor in ill-health;
iii) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the potential for health promotion and health education in the workplace and of constraints;
iv) critically evaluate workplace health promotion initiatives.
Holistic definitions of health, health education vs health promotion, socio-cultural factors affecting health.
Attitudes, beliefs and values, locus of control: models of health behaviour: health campaign evaluation. The process of campaign development. Health concerns of target groups, eg. adolescents, women, men. Legal responsibilities of employers and Government policy. The workplace as a factor in ill-health: stress, environment, opportunities and constraints in workplace health promotion.
