SHL6372 - Leisure Studies/Leisure Management

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

(1) recognise the role of leisure within contemporary society;
(2) demonstrate an understanding of the relationships of leisure to work, non-work and unemployment;
(3) consider the role of leisure relativity to issues of access, gender, race, age, disability and class;
(4) demonstrate an understanding of the particular principles and techniques found within leisure and recreation management;
(5) assess critically the management of particular facilities or events;
(6) demonstrate awareness of linkage between theoretical perspectives and practical activities within leisure and recreation management.

Content:

This will be drawn from:

definitional and conceptual framework of leisure; leisure, work, the work-ethic and contemporary perceptions; issues of access and control of leisure and leisure experiences; leisure and gender within contemporary society; leisure and race, age, disability and class within contemporary society; a definitional framework of leisure and recreation and their roles within society; generic and particular management skills and techniques; legal considerations and obligations facing leisure and recreation managers; research, policy and practice in leisure and recreation management; management theory and how this is related to service delivery within leisure and recreation.
