SHL5402 - PE and Swimming/Researching Young People

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate understanding of the aims and content of Swimming taught in secondary school at key stage 3 & 4
(2) plan and construct progressive swimming lessons with clear teaching objectives, tasks, teaching points, safety issues, progressive targets, observation and feedback.
(3) demonstrate knowledge of the key partners to work with in the community
(4) demonstrate knowledge of the importance of PE, health and lifelong participation in physical activity
(5) Skills in researching in small groups and evaluating the effectiveness of a selected research methodology in the context of a school environment
(6) demonstrate focused knowledge and understanding pertaining to children and physical activity

Content:

National Curriculum Programme of Study Key Stages 3 & 4 Practical teaching in Secondary PE Swimming
Teaching methods: teaching points, observation, demonstration, organisation, positioning, feedback
Lesson planning and unit planning, monitoring and assessment, differentiation and progression targets
Community partnerships
PE, Fitness and Health
Planning and designing data collection methods
Theoretical knowledge in an area from: the contribution of physical activity to social, moral and intellectual development of children.
Competition and the young child, cooperation and fair play. Patterns of participation
The role of the school and physical education in developing positive attitudes towards sport and physical activity in young children
Motivation and preventing drop out from physical activity
Socio-cultural factors affecting children’s participation in physical activity
Report writing
