SHL5302 - Research Methods/Health Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate an awareness of a range of qualitative research techniques;
(2) demonstrate knowledge of appropriate methodological applications across a range of research situations;
(3) design a small-scale research project;
(4) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relationships between fitness, physical activity and health;
(5) evaluate the epidemiological evidence linking coronary heart disease and physical activity;
(6) appraise the contributions of fitness assessment and exercise prescription to health.

Content:

The ethical and moral framework of qualitative research. Computer-aided research tools and the Data Protection Act. Questionnaire-based research; interview based research. Record keeping/data processing; presentation of results/report writing. Health, fitness and physical activity and their relationship with hypokinetic disease;
Epidemiological evidence linking coronary heart disease and physical activity. Risk factors for coronary heart disease;
utility of exercise prescription and fitness assessment. Utility of exercise prescription and fitness assessment.
