SHL4452 - Psychology of Motor Performance and Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 classify sporting activities and analyse the information processing demands of sporting activities;
2 demonstrate an understanding of a range of factors which influence sports performance;
3 demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the nature of, and influences on, physical growth and the development of fundamental motor skills;
4 use observation, measurement and statistical tools to analyse the development of fundamental motor skills.
5 Identify ethical considerations in research. Undertake preliminary data analysis and demonstrate an understanding of quantitative research methods

Content:

• definitions of skill and ability and systems of skill classification;
• information processing models of motor performance
• factors affecting performance, e.g. arousal, confidence;
• measurement of performance and evaluation of the talent prediction process;
• practical exemplars from contrasting sporting activities;
• physical development during infancy and childhood and the effect of nutrition and activity;
• children’s physiological responses to exercise and the effect of training;
• the development of coordination, balance, agility and fundamental motor skills and the identification of problems
• assessment of growth and the development of fundamental motor skills
• use of descriptive statistics, tests of difference and relationship
• quantitative research methods and ethical considerations
• presentation of data

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in lecture sessions, video analysis, practical performance and movement analysis workshops, and seminars
