SHL4372 - Active Children/Sport Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the factors influencing children’s level and type of involvement in sport and physical activity;
(2) reflect upon the nature of changes in attitude towards sport and physical activity amongst young people;
(3) demonstrate an awareness of how practical activities might be structured to facilitate children’s understanding and skill development;
(4) demonstrate awareness of current and potential sports development opportunities in the school and community for young people;
(5) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key agencies and agents involved in sports development.

Content:

Children’s understanding and attitudes towards sport and exercise; the relationship between health and physical activity; the gender dimension of physical activity. Influence of family, coach, peers, school, local provision and initiatives. Structuring practical activities for children for effective development of physical and social skills.

Awareness of current sport development initiatives with the school and community. School-community links. The role of agencies and agents, such as, Sport England, Youth Sport Trust, Sports Coach UK, Specialist Sports Colleges, and their initiatives, e.g. TOPs programmes, Active Schools, Active Sports, and Active Communities.
