PEDB402 - Environments, Energy and Biotechnology

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Investigate the relationships between living organisms and their environment through the local environment.
(2) Discuss how developments in biotechnology may affect people and the environment.
(3) Demonstrate understanding of the processes that lead to climate changes and their consequences.
(4) Consider the problems associated with the utilisation of the earth’s resources and waste generation.

Content:

Biosphere, biomes and ecosystem structure. Structure of the atmosphere. Causes and effects of climate change. Biological effects of air pollution. DNA benefits and risks associated with GM foods. Food safety and ethics of GM technology.

Renewable and non-renewable resources and present sources of energy supply. Alternative energy sources e.g. tidal, waste, solar, plants.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Combination of lectures, practicals, fieldwork, student presentations.
