PEDB311 - Religious Education (Junior Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of six world religions, and the necessary developing skills to organize and deliver materials that give access to learning for all.
(2) Demonstrate a developing awareness of the role religious education contributes to the SMSC well being of each child, the school and its social context of the neighbourhood it serves.
(3) Display evidence, through a range of tasks, of a coherent understanding of the link between planning, monitoring and assessment, in order to facilitate appropriate opportunities for success and the raising of children’s self esteem.
(4) To deliver clear expressions of inclusive teaching and learning, linking the world and the school in dynamic relationship in its provision for and celebration of diversity.

Content:

It takes seriously the context for religious education in the United Kingdom, and through instant communication, knowledge of the globe in which we live, namely one which is multi-racial, multi-religious and multi- cultural. Students are both challenged and supported in an exploration of dominant values expressed by Faith communites, and what this might mean for them as individuals, as student teachers, and for the pupils and staff with whom they work.

It explores ideas of insider/outsider, nature/nurture, ethnicity/ identity, stereotype/prejudice, inclusive/exclusive, set against a background of religious ethical principles and beliefs.

Such an approach links with and examines non-statutory religious education documents, together with statutory requirements, in the process empowering students with the necessary skills to develop themselves into effective religious education practitioners.

Learning and Teaching Information:

It is student centred, linking their perceptions of the world with that of religious perspectives, creatively making sense of both.
It is ethnographic, engaging students in conversation with members of minority ethnic communities.
It is experiential, affective, sharpening the five senses through a vast range of hands on materials, venturing into the multiple world of the visual arts.
It is reflective, empowering individuals and groups toward thinking skills, co-operative approaches that bring shared understandings.
It is celebratory, developing attitudes of appreciation and thanksgiving, exploring the extraordinary in the ordinary.
It is multi-faith, cross curricular, continually updated to be relevant, engaging with contemporary events that impinge upon school and community relationships, It makes wide use of ICT skills taught in college.
It develops the principle of partners in education, teacher and student learning together .
Its an approach that both shapes and links the school ethos to learning in the classroom, developing insight and skills to deliver collective worship / assembly as a vehicle for transformation.

001 Assessed essay: SMSC 1 x 1000 words week 3 50%
