PEDB272 - Effective Learning and Teaching (Early Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Communicate an understanding of the range of teaching and management strategies appropriate to early years learning and teaching
(2) Begin to express an understanding of the range of assessment approaches appropriate to the foundation stage and key stage 1 curriculum\
(3) Make observations of individual children and groups and use these observations to draw conclusions related to teaching, management of the environment, assessment and children’s development
(4) Evaluate the role of teaching assistants and other personnel in the effective teaching of young children

Content:

The aim of this module is to raise awareness of effective methods, structures and practices in teaching young children including:
• Evaluation of teaching sessions
• Teaching strategies including play, role play, VAK, MI approaches, circle time, brain gym
• Target setting drawing on effective evaluation – the effective use of marking in assessment
• Making observations and using the data gathered effectively
• Ethical issues in educational research
• Effective management of learning including the use of support personnel, behaviour management and differentiation

Standards addressed but not formally assessed:

Research: students will make observations of children in a range of learning settings to relate theoretical perspectives to practice. They will be introduced to qualitative and quantitative approaches to research. They will consider ethical issues related to educational research.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis. Time allocated to each is appropriate to the module delivered eg. P.E. all workshop; professional studies workshop 50%, tutorial 50%.
