PEDB241 - Non Core 2: History and Geography (Early Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of the approaches used in effective history and geography teaching at KS 1. (Q14)
(2) Understand the content of the National Curriculum for KS 1 and related guidance e.g. QCA units for planning and apply this knowledge in planning for this age range. (Q15)
(3) Be aware of the approaches used in the effective teaching of history and geography at KS2 and the content of the national curriculum and related guidance at this level. (Q14)
(4) Reflect on the importance of history and geography within the primary curriculum and be able to make links between history and other areas of the primary curriculum.

Content:

The history component of the course will cover:
• The nature of history and how this relates to the teaching of primary age pupils
• The content of the National Curriculum Programmes of study (at KS1 and links to the FS curriculum and KS2) and related guidance including QCA documentation
• Pedagogy for teaching history including the use of artefacts, visual sources, stories, oral etc. Some reference will be made to the use of role play, local fieldwork, museum visits, archaeology etc.
• Planning related to history
Links will be made to other curriculum areas where relevant and to the use of ICT in teaching history. The inclusive nature of history teaching will be promoted throughout.

The geography component of the course will cover:
• The nature of geography and how this relates to the teaching of primary age pupils
• The content of the National Curriculum Programmes of study (at KS1&2 and links to the FS curriculum) and related guidance including QCA documentation
• Pedagogy for teaching geography including fieldwork, use of ICT (to include video, DVD, digital photography), visual and written sources to include the use of story, photo packs, artefacts, role play and visitors.
• Planning for geography in the primary curriculum and the use of formative and summative assessment.
Focus will be on the process of teaching geography in the primary school with links made to other curriculum areas where relevant. Issues of diversity and inclusion will be addressed within the taught sessions.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Each session will include a variety of approaches to promote active learning, to reflect those utilised in the primary classroom. These will be undertaken as a whole group, small group, pair or individually. Learning will be supported by reading materials provided in Study and CLARCS packs and via online learning. Assignments and tasks will be scaffolded. Students will be required to undertake directed tasks in preparation for sessions.
