PED6882 - Diversity in the Primary School

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of how children develop and that their progress may be affected by a range of developmental, social, religious, ethnic, cultural and linguistic influences
2 demonstrate knowledge and understanding of aspects of cultural and linguistic difference and societies; politics and educational policies; moral, religious and philosophical values, including issues of social justice and their effects on learning
3 question concepts and theories encountered in their studies

Content:

This module has several strands:

• An introduction to anti-racist approaches to planning a culturally inclusive curriculum with high expectations for all children. Focus is on approaches to teaching and learning which demonstrate a broad, rich and relevant curriculum
• Focus on the development of social, cultural, spiritual and moral values across the primary curriculum
• Emphasis on the principles of planning and teaching curriculum for global citizenship
• Focus on a range of approaches for building on children’s sense of identity, self-esteem and confidence. The interrelationship between self-concept and ethnic identity will be addressed
• Focus on the differing levels of attainment between ethnic groups
• An introduction to the theory, principles and research evidence related to the pedagogy for teaching children who are learning English as an additional language

Learning and Teaching Information:

Teaching methods will include weekly lectures, practical workshops and tutorials. A range of teaching models will be presented. Trainees will be required to work in pairs and groups during sessions.
