On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Know the assessment requirements and arrangements for the subjects/curriculum areas in the age ranges they are trained to teach, including those relating to public examinations and qualifications. (Q11)
2. Express an understanding of a range of approaches to assessment and relate this to the diverse needs of pupils and the value systems underpinning it. (K3) (Q12)
3. Know how to use local and national statistical information to evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching, to monitor the progress of those they teach and to raise levels of attainment. (Q13 )(T3)
4. Debate issues related to the philosophy behind why education practices have developed the way they have. (K6) (R4).
On successful completion of the module, trainees will be able to:
• Make appropriate use of a range of monitoring and assessment strategies to evaluate pupils’ progress towards planned learning objectives and use this information to improve their own planning and teaching.
• Assess pupils’ progress accurately using National Curriculum level descriptors, criteria from national qualifications, the requirements of Awarding Bodies, National Curriculum Assessment frameworks or from National Strategies.
• Identify and support more able pupils, those who are working below age related expectations, those who are failing to achieve their potential in learning and those who experience behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.
Content:• Assessment For Learning as an important tool for improvement. How to give constructive feedback.
• Analysing a range of local and national data and debating how these figures are used and reported.
• A review of a range of curricula to compare theory and practices. • A consideration of the development of UK education and how this has impacted on current practices.
• Target setting for individual and for groups of pupils with reference to: national benchmarks, comparative data, the use of raw, gain and value added measures of pupil attainment and progress.
• Quality assurance in monitoring and assessment with reference to the fitness for purpose of methods and records, the quality of assessment data (reliability and dependability, validity) and the integrity of the judgements based upon such data.
Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis. Time allocated to each is appropriate to the module delivered eg. P.E. all workshop; professional studies workshop 50%, tutorial 50%.
