MFC4132 - Writing for the News Media

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate an understanding of make-up of local, national and independent news media and their audiences
2 Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between journalism and society
3 Identify, locate, research and produce basic news items for a stated audience
4 Demonstrate an appropriate use of language and style for a designated purpose

Content:

The topic introduces students to the role of the news media, its relationship with its audiences and the impact it has on society. It also introduces students to the practical aspects of sourcing, researching and writing for a broad range of news media and the different writing styles employed by journalists and bloggers.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will be taught in workshops which introduce students to core theory and ideas but include a creative mix of hands-on practical exercises and experiences which help students to develop sound research, ideas for content and flexible writing skills which can be applied in range of journalistic scenarios.
