On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Critically review theory related to the social, emotional, physical, cognitive development of children, young people and adults
2 Analyse the impact of socio economic status, gender, disability, race, religion and culture on people’s development, motivation, opportunities and behaviour
3 Critically reflect on their interactions with young people and adults in light of research in these aspects of people’s development
4 Demonstrate the ability to critically review literature and interactions, debate issues from an informed standpoint and engage in sustained, informed argument
In this module students will develop their understanding of children, young people and adults’ development and the impact of their environment and other issues on development, learning, work, behaviour and opportunities. Students will examine their own views regarding the people with whom they work and how an improved understanding of research in this field can lead to improvements in client interactions and relationship building.
Topics will include:
• Social, emotional, cognitive and physical development
• Inhibitors to development
• Motivation and the impact of environment on a person’s behaviour and attitudes to learning, work, etc
• Building relationships with clients and the impact of personal perspectives on client behaviour and interaction outcomes
Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions
