HUM4782 - Humanities Professional Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues related to work developed through the study of texts and the use of other disciplinary resources that support appropriate reflection;
2 demonstrate the acquisition of careers information searching skills, a knowledge of routes into work relevant to graduates and the preliminary development of a personal career planning strategy;
3 demonstrate an understanding of the personal, ethical and external factors which influence career choice;

Content:

In the first part of the module a number of sessions will be offered to help students explore the basic ideas behind CV preparatoin, effective self-presentation and interview technique; and to develop career information searching skills. Towards the end of the this part of the module students will prepare a group presentation reflecting on good practice in career planning.

Students will then complete the module by going on to work on a further group research project related to local community/environmental/workplace or professional issues. The assessment of this project will focus on the development and application of these skills.

Instead of the final group project, students may choose, subject to the approval of the module co-ordinator, to complete a placement with an external organisation.

Learning and Teaching Information:

During the first part of the module (weeks 21-26, 30-33) learning about work-related issues and career development skills will be offered through a series of planary sessions; and through the requirements for all students to research and prepare a group presentation on career planning relevant to their academic discipline.

During the second part of the module (weeks 34 - 39) learning about group work, organisation and presentation skills will be through group project work, supported by workshops and drop-in sessions for each group.

Students who choose to complete the second part of the module via a placements with an external organisation will be supported by a placements supervisor.
