HIS5712 - Research & Discovery

Objectives:

On the successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate an understanding of the limitations and advantages of primary sources;
(2) demonstrate an ability to use primary sources to test a hypothesis;
(3) assess the validity of different interpretations of the histiography of the subject to be studied in their research projects;
(4) undertake both small group and individual work.
(5) write a sustained piece of research including all necessary academic apparatus.

Content:

In semester one students undertake a group study testing hypothesis using primary sources that they have been provided with. Students then progress to individual research projects again testing a specified hypothesis, but in this case using primary sources and artifacts that they must locate themselves. Precise topics offered each year depend on staffing. Indicative topics would include: (group project) the Civil Rights Movement in the USA during the 1950’s – 60’s; (individual project) The Victoria Press; The Railways in Britain and the Empire, 1830 – 1918; Women in the USA.

Assessment:

001 Project report 1 x 2000 words (end of sem 1) 40%
002 Research project 1 x 3000 words (end of sem 2) 60%
