FYP5012 - Research Informed Practice: An Introduction

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Formulate an overview of the purposes and influences of research on professional practice
2 Discuss key methodological approaches with reference to relevant debates
3 Outline merits and application of different research methods
4 Critique subject-relevant research in terms of appropriateness of methodology and methods
5 Express a basic understanding of key research ethics”

Content:

The module focuses on initial exploration of the notion of research and the different types of research (e.g. social research, psychological research, Government research). It develops student’s research literacy through helping them to understand research origins, principles, methodologies, methods and terminology and raises awareness of ethical considerations and the significance of validity and reliability. It is intended to prepare and motivate students for possible future engagement in research study. Students will critically evaluate the appropriateness of methodology and methods in examples of research including samples relevant to students’ professional fields.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will draw on a mixture of methods including: lecture; group work and activities; internet research, class round table discussion and debate, individual/ group tutorial opportunities. E-materials will support distance study. Students will be expected to apply theoretical discussion to samples of existing research materials.
