2 Describe and evaluate some of the key factors affecting the lives of modern day children and young people
3 Identify and analyse situations in their workplace relating to key aspects of the module
4 Demonstrate a practical knowledge of some aspects of current information and communication media
The module focuses on contemporary issues that relate to children and to those working in contexts that support children, young people and families.
Specific elements will be based around:
• children in the information and communication age – this will include the impact of the media in children’s lives, the use and misuse of the internet, social networking, television and children’s literature
• future curricula, global classroom, ‘green’ education, health and access to sport and leisure, young people’s engagement in topical issues, attitudes to world and political issues.
This module will draw on a mixture of methods including: lecture; group work; class round table discussion, research and debate. Reference will be made to recent and current publications, articles and web-based data that illustrate the major areas of change in the lives of today’s children. Students will be expected to apply theoretical discussion, to their working contexts. A range of group activities will be included in the sessions and supported by material drawn from range of literature and media. Students will be required to engage critically and analytically with the topical issues and to apply the understanding developed to the contexts in which they work.
