FYP4042 - Introduction to Coaching and Mentoring Skills

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of effective mentoring and coaching
2 Identify situations in which mentoring and coaching may be effective for individuals or groups
3 Plan for the use of coaching and mentoring skills in their professional practice.

Content:

This module introduces students to the practical skills related to coaching and mentoring, theories related to supporting children, young people and adults and principles of mentoring.

Key themes include:
• Building relationships
• Circumstances and conditions for mentoring
• Mentoring children, young people or adults and the relative adaptation of the approaches
• Identifying personal development issues and opportunities to use coaching and mentoring skills in personal, professional practice.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will be through a range of lectures, workshops and tutorials. Students will be expected to draw on a range of sources including their own working experiences. Group discussion and tasks will form a significant proportion of the College based learning to develop relevant analytical skills. Students will record their development within a Personal Development Log.
