On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of current policy and provision for pupils with SEN;
2 demonstrate an understanding of the concept of support;
3 demonstrate an understanding of the identification and assessment process for pupils with SEN;
4 identify the needs of pupils according to legislative and national guidance;
5 demonstrate knowledge of systems for the management of the pupils with SEN with whom they work, including their contribution to their teaching; development, monitoring and evaluation of action plans, IEPs, IBPs, target setting and working with inter-agency professionals
The module will include:
• an awareness of the special educational needs that are most frequently encountered ;
• statutory frameworks and policies, for example, SEN, Inclusion, Disability, Health and Safety, Child Protection, Every Child Matters;
• Good practice guidance including monitoring and evaluation procedures : e.g. IEPs, IBPs, PSPs, reviews, inter-agency collaboration; and key principles, e.g. the concept of inclusion underpinning the SEN Code of Practice;
• the roles of professionals working with learners with SEN
• the nature and range of support for pupils with SEN: the skills and methods of differentiation, maximising progress to ensure attainment of pupils with SEN
Level 4 module will provide a foundation level of knowledge and understanding of supporting learning. In addition to the required subject knowledge, the module will introduce students to key skills and enable them to develop the necessary academic skills.
A key learning and teaching strategy for this module will be to teach students to use work-based research and enquiry to support group discussion and debate.
