FSL4082 - Communication and Language

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 explain the importance of talk in learning
2 show how relevant research influences the teaching of language and communication skills
3 identify a range of strategies for supporting communication and language skills including strategies for those who have English as an additional language
4 use the content of the current government guidance relevant to their work, with the internet as a key source of information

Content:

The module will be theoretical and practical and will draw on the participants’ own experience and knowledge to develop knowledge and understanding. Sessions will include:
The role of speaking and listening in literacy learning. Strategies for supporting language development in the classroom, including the role of drama.
The key skills involved in good communication and listening.
Supporting bilingual pupils in the classroom.
The use of appropriate ICT to support the development of language and communication skills.
Government guidance.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Level 1 modules will provide a foundation level of knowledge and understanding of supporting learning. In addition to the required subject knowledge , the modules will introduce students to key skills and enable them to develop the necessary academic skills. Students will use pair work as a key learning strategy.

The sessions in this module will demand students to reflect on their own effectiveness in terms of developing language skills and identify areas where effectiveness can be improved.
