FEY5142 - Working with Families

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Reflect on the experiences families may have raising young children, evaluating incidents and case studies from a range of perspectives
(2) Evaluate effective and ineffective communication between professionals and families\
(3) Critically review legislation related to the rights of families, children and those working with young children in light of own experience and case studies
(4) Exchange information with families effectively including information relating progress, health, welfare, personal circumstances and incidents

Content:

This module enables students to draw together information and experiences related to family circumstances and interactions with families. During the course of the module students will be expected to reflect critically on effective communication with families and how circumstances may influence interactions with families.

The module will include a study of:
• Case studies of family interactions with children’s services
• Reports and logs of communication with families
• Legislation related to the rights of parents and carers in relation to provision for their child

Within this module, students will be expected to demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to reflect on their own practice, forming a personal development plan related to interactions with families.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will be through a range of lectures, workshops and tutorials. Students will be expected to draw on a range of sources including their own working experiences. Group discussion and tasks will form a significant proportion of the College based learning to develop relevant analytical skills. Students will record their development within a Personal Development Log.
