FEY5102 - Inhibitors to Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Outline a pattern of ‘normal’ development and how or where delays may occur
(2) Examine theory related to the reasons for developmental delay and disability and consider how these may be manifest in a young child
(3) Critically evaluate key research, legislation and policy related to the inclusion of children with additional needs into an Early Years setting
(4) Reflect on how to create effective and enriching environments for overcoming or accommodating children with developmental issues, additional needs, disabilities or special educational needs

Content:

This module introduces students to a range of relevant information related to developmental delay and disability, as well as social, economic and personal circumstances that may inhibit delay in children 0-8 years.

The module will include a study of:
• Emotional, physical and cognitive development and possible related inhibitors
• Issues related to cultural differences, traveling children, family circumstances, immigration, EAL etc.
• How to accommodate diverse needs within the childcare and educational setting

Within this module, students will be expected to demonstrate problem solving skills in gathering drawing together evidence and forming conclusions related to case studies and reports.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will be through a range of lectures, workshops and tutorials. Students will be expected to draw on a range of sources including their own working experiences. Group discussion and tasks will form a significant proportion of the College based learning to develop relevant analytical skills. Students will record their development within a Personal Development Log.
