FAN5042 - Autism and Related Conditions

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Describe and explain autism: the spectrum; causation and incidence
(2) Identify the difficulties faced by children and young adults with an autistic spectrum condition
(3) Describe and analyse a range of strategies to meet the social, emotional and learning needs of children and/or young adults with an autistic spectrum condition

Content:

This module will focus on:

- An introduction to autism: the spectrum, the triad of difference , related conditions, causation and incidence
- Communication difficulties and supportive strategies and equipment
- Social difficulties and supportive strategies
- Inflexibility of thought and behaviour and supportive strategies
- Sensory difficulties and supportive strategies and equipment
- Building emotional resilience

Learning and Teaching Information:

At Level 5 it is expected that students will know and understand the essential mechanics of HE study and be able to work more independently in resourcing and researching their learning. Work at Level 5 will emphasize the application and analysis of theory and develop the skills of critical reasoning.
