On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of poetic texts in which spirituality is explored;
2 Analyse selected poetic texts with rigour and sensitivity, demonstrating awareness of form and relevant context;
3 Discuss selected poetic texts in relation to issues such as interpretation, ethical and literary understanding, and man’s relation to the divine;
4 Critically evaluate and engage with relevant recent scholarship on selected poetic texts.
The module will offer students an introduction to material that connects literature and spirituality in the context of orthodox religion. The question of literary art as an alternative or complement to pictorial and musical art will be considered. The function of language as a means of sharing and experiencing spiritual insights will be a focus for debate. This may be considered in the context of holy books, such as the Bible and the Koran.
English poetry with a Christian theme will be studied, for example the metaphysical poets. Poetry of related religions will be explored, for example Muslim poetry of the Sufi tradition. The context for these works will be considered, including for example the historical background; the contexts in which these texts were and are read or performed; reception from orthodox and other audiences. Specialist terms will be explored, for example metaphysical, literary, lyrical, allusion, influence, philosophy, religion. The representation of humanity will be considered, particularly in relation to understandings of the divine.
Seminars will make use of a number of learning and teaching methods including: short presentations by tutor; exercises in groups; informal presentations by students; plenary discussions.
