ENG6592 - Twentieth-Century Literature II: Two Twentieth Century Writers

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of an appropriate range of writings, not also covered by the module ENG 6542 Twentieth-Century Literature, by two specified twentieth-century writers.
2 Discuss and analyse a selection of texts by each author in relation to relevant personal, intellectual and cultural contexts and the literary conventions of the period
3 Discuss and analyse the treatment within these texts of topics particularly relevant to the specified authors
4 Write critically and sensitively on topics of their choice, drawing on a wide range of reading and showing awareness of critical debate

Content:

This module offers students the opportunity to study the work of two authors (for example: Virginia Woolf, James Joyce) in more detail and at greater length than the Literary Period module allows. Students will make a close study of a range of writings by each writer. They will be encouraged to examine their work in relation to literary and theoretical developments (eg modernism, postmodernism) and to socio-cultural and political debates (eg feminism, war, censorship).
Students will be expected to read a substantial body of the writings of each author.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Fortnightly Seminars will combine tutor guidance with analysis of texts, discussion and debate. Learning will be supported by handouts, and by preparation and reading before each seminar as directed by the tutor.
