On successful completion of the module students will be able to
(1) Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the generic conventions of dramatic texts;
(2) Show an awareness of historical developments in drama;
(3) Analyse plays in performance and on the page;
(4) Demonstrate understanding of the dramatic form through creative performance.
For the duration of one semester, students will study the genre of drama, assess theatrical performance, and gain practical experience from preparing and acting in their own performances. The relation between drama and audience will be a key consideration. Students will undertake written adaptations from short stories and/or extracts of novels in order to learn about the elements of drama. A play currently in production will be selected for detailed analysis. After a theatre trip, students will write a review essay on the play. Students will then create and perform a short play, demonstrating what they have learned about the dramatic form. Texts are likley to be selected from Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility, Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca.
The course will be taught in seminars, with tutor presentations, group exercises (including performance), group discussions and student presentations.
